The strain-controlled direct shear machine includes essential components such as a shear box, soil container, loading unit, proving ring, and a dial gauge
(ordered separately) to measure shear deformation and volume changes. One common soil container is a two-piece square shear box. The proving ring is used to measure the shear load exerted on the soil along the shearing plane.
