The Barcol Hardness Tester - also known as the Barcol Impressor® (a registered trademark of InstruCon Inc.) - is a widely used portable instrument for measuring the hardness of soft metals, composites, fiberglass, plastics, and similar materials. It gives fast, accurate, repeatable readings, which is why it's a staple across aerospace, automotive, marine, and manufacturing work.
Qualitest's version, the QualiHBA, is a new-generation digital Barcol-type tester built for high precision, repeatability, and an ergonomic design that's easy to live with day to day, all while meeting international hardness testing standards.
In practice, it's a portable device that applies a consistent spring-loaded force through an indentation pin, measuring how much the material resists penetration. The depth of that indentation sets the hardness value, shown digitally for a precise reading - a method well suited to materials too soft for Rockwell or Brinell testing but still needing a quick, reliable hardness check.
The Barcol name traces back to the Barber-Colman Company, which first developed this style of hardness tester.
